30 June 2004

back...

Okay, so after disappearing for a few days things have settled down (somewhat) to the point where I have a bit of time…
The weekend was extended by a day as I went to PA to stay with Aunt Beth while my Mother and “Aunts” went “Down the Shore” for the weekend, so I did not leav eto come back to D.C. until Monday morning – and then it was straight to work and it has been crazy ever since.
I had gotten a phone call on Sunday from one of the grad students telling me that our –80 centigrade freezer was dying. He wanted to know if I needed anything saved from it that was not on the bottom shelf. (The Bottom shelf is always used for items that are really temperature dependent such as competent cells, Fetal Bovine Serum, and cells…thankfully I pretty much keep every thing on the bottom shelf. Other than that – it is the usual crazy stuff around here. Even though I will be in the lab this weekend - to see how the freezers (-20) are defrosting and then if they are kicking back down to temp - it will be nice. KD is having a party at her place this weekend for the holiday and as a going away as she will be leaving to start work in NYC by the end of the month. And yes Mike, I’ll be at the radio show this weekend!

wedding things...

So I am back to work today, and for the most part recovered from the large amounts of Versed and Demerol that were pumped into me on Tuesday morning...And it is like I never even left…I have not decided as of yet if that is a good thing or a bad thing…when I decided, I’ll let you know…
Not much really to say…I finally placed my dress order for Andrea’s wedding, now I just have to get the shoes and the purse to go along with it all…I think that I am going to go with one of the following shoes: Shoe A or Shoe B.
As for purses, I found the following one and it was not that expensive and I actually like the way it looks. Andrea decided that she wants our shoes to match our dresses, and I figure that I am just going to get the purse while I am at it rather than dealing with trying to find a purse that matches later on or god forbid, trying to get a purse dyed the exact same colour later on…that is just one headache that I do not need right now!

21 June 2004

I enjoyed my weekend. The goal was to enjoy the weekend and relax, I can say that I most definitely accomplished that goal.
Friday night, I went to see the lead singer from Toad the Wet Sprocket open up for five for fighting which one of the other grad students had invited me out for…so I went. Saturday I spent the afternoon and the night with KD just hanging out and enjoying spending time with one another before she moves on to NYC next month. Yesterday, I sat by the pool reading and sunning my self...and of course, now my chest is totally burnt…but at least the pain has gone away after a nice vinegar bath and a dose of Noxzema .
So I will not be around for the next few days. I have some exploratory surgery that needs to get done, so I will soon be at home enjoying the pain meds and far away from internet access…I hope everyone have a pleasant week!

Bold what you dilisk or Hate and then add three of your own.

Dilemma of the Day...

Okay...So you are in charge of a machine, and it breaks. No problem, you just send it back to be fixed, right?
Now the question is if the machine never comes back, why do you not call and check it out? Ahhhh!!!!

15 June 2004

The weekend was less then exciting, for the most part. I mostly hung around and just took it easy. Friday was a total wash – the weather was ugly and it was somewhat cold, so my original idea of going and reading outside of one of the local coffee shops was now an option. I talked to Jeanie early in the evening and we discussed the idea of going out with some others, but it never really materialized, probably due to the fact that by that point the rain was really coming down and no one felt like walking to their respective Metro stops. But we were able to decide to have dinner over at my place the following night.
After finally getting out of bed at 10:30 am (!!!) on Saturday and reading the paper, I did some cleaning and getting read for dinner before going down to the pool for a nap. The highlight of the dinner was going to be the introduction of a new vegetable for both Jeanie and I – the kohlrabi!
Phil had grown them in his garden and then brought them in for us…I seemed to be the only one that was really interested in trying it, so I of course needed a fellow victim and Jeanie was picked, but she did not complain and was kind of looking forward to it also.
Over all, it was not bad. I cut and pealed it like you would a potato. Over all it smelled and tasted like cabbage, but had the texture of a turnip. I laughed really hard when I was looking for a picture of a Kohlrabi this morning and I found out that the name comes from the German words, “Kohl” for cabbage and “rabi” for turnip! Over all, the meal went well and the steaks came out of the broiler just at the perfect time. I sent Jeanie home with leftover steak and potatoes (double baked Florentine) and a few new books for her to read. Over all, a very enjoyable (cheep) night in with an old friend.
Sunday came around and the weather was overcast and cool. I called Abs to see what she was up to for the day. She said that she was going to be leaving soon to drive up to PA to drop her stepfather off at his place. As he lives about 20 minutes away from my mothers house, I asked her is she would like the company and maybe even dinner at my mom’s house – Abs said it sounded like a plan. I called my mother to check to make sure that it was okay “Oh! Of Course! We would love to see you!” was the reply from her.
After a nice dinner with Aunt Beth (my mother already had made plans to go to a concert that night) so she left when dinner was about half way done with her friend Lynne. We were back in D.C. a few minutes after 10:00 pm so that we both could make our bed times.

Yesterday at work it was nonstop! Day it is a bit calmer, but come Wednesday – the pace will be picking up again…

Oh, and just for fun:

…random bits…

…I am off on Friday as the whole city will be nuts…This city is usually nuts anyway…my Father was in town yesterday and spent the night at my place, so I go a decent amount of time with him…his health is not great right now, I (and the doctor who saw him today) think that all of the stress on him from my Grandfather estate is to blame…he had new pictures for me of my brother and he is just too cute for words…we are expecting thunderstorms sometime this evening, tonight…knowing my luck it will be just as I am walking home, and I’ll get soaked…I am very tired and looking forward to sleeping in for as long as possible in the morning…no plans for the weekend, just catching up on things that need to get done…

The guy that came in to calibrate and fix our Thermocyclers today could have been Jon Bon Jovi's twin brother (the 80’s Version)...Our lovely MD/PhD student kept on singing "You Give love a Bad Name" and I could not stop laughing...the tech guy was really nice and I really wanted to tell him who he reminded me of and ask him if had every gotten that before, but I was afraid that he would be insulted...

Wonder boy flipped out about this, when he saw it today. He has been flipping out about the whole situation for the past two days and our new grad student was talking about how Reagan was a great president. I thought that Wonder boy was going to lose it! While Wonder boy pointed out the flaws in Reagan’s policies and what not, Phil and I brought up the point of how the AIDS crisis was a direct result of Reagan not caring. We explained the history of ACT UP and how it got started and a short history of HIV/AIDS in the world. Our new Grad student said that he would think it over...
On a related note, the Federal government, D.C. and the Local governments as well as most businesses (including the other University’s in D.C.) will be closed on Friday due to traffic and security concerns…except ours…hummm…

03 June 2004

As I was leaving work last night, all I could think about how I hoped that my ride home was not another repeat performance of Tuesday night’s trip home.
(Long story short, when the Metro pulled up to my stop the door would not open, the emergence doors would not open and the emergency call box did not work. The train car still had working lights and air, but no way out. Finally someone, outside of the car on the train platform, got the attention the train car driver, and he eventually got us out of the car by pushing buttons at the next stop. And then of course, we had a resident crazy with us on the train that was flipping out the whole time – and no, I am not just being mean…he had been cursing and swearing to himself the whole ride before hand and when we got stuck in the car he just lost it…).
Anyway, I did not get stuck on the Metro again, and walked back to my place dreaming of a short nap before I started in on a bunch of household cleaning duties. I walked into my place and gave some pets to The Kitten, and he was just not himself. He was walking very close to the ground and not really “talking” to me. When I went to pick him up he cried out and started to growl. Very strange! I put him back down and started to make him dinner. When I walked past him to put it down, he hissed at me!! As he ate his dinner he continued to growl and whine. Not good to say the least! As I walked towards him, he hissed again and crawled (Really! He was not walking!) under the bed. I decided right then that it was time to call the Vet, and of course it was almost 9:00 pm! The Vet’s office was closed, as I expected, but I did get the number of the emergence clinic. I called Abs and she agreed to take us over to see the doctor. (I am very grateful to her for doing this for us, but I must say that it is times like this that it really sucks that I do not have a car down here!) After a few hours at the vet’s office ($80.00 to just see the doctor!) it was decided that he had a UTI (Male cats are VERY prone to them, and I thought that he was getting enough water, but I guess not!) and needed a few days of antibiotics and other meds. After signing over my first-born child as payment, we were finally ready to head home. All of the nurses and the doctor commented on what a good baby he was! See, even when he is sick, everyone loves him! When we got home; I gave him some wet food with extra water added. He will be getting wet food at every meal until we go back to see out normal vet next week. Some how I don’t think that the Kitten is going to have a problem with this, as he LOVES wet food days (Sundays and Wednesdays). I woke up a few times during the night to check on him, and he was not sleeping on “his side” of the bed. I think getting on and off the bed was just too much for him last night, so he knocked the hamper over and slept on all of the clothing, which usually I would not allow, but I figured that since he was sick he would be allowed to have a few extra freedoms.
This morning as soon as the alarm went off there was the fluff ball hopping on me waiting for me to get up so that he could have breakfast. I guess he is feeling better, now if I could only get him to take his medicine without a fight…

02 June 2004

I came into work this morning to discover that my usual 8:00 am meeting was not being held…oh well…so much for that breakfast and coffee I was planning on having. So I went and got some eggs from the café and went back to lab. I finished my eggs, check my e-mail and my usual journals and found this as the quote of the day on Brian’s website and had a really good laugh. (For the record, he was not the one that replied but was thinking it…)

Woman on the Corner Talking on Cell Phone: We need to get rid of these activist judges on the bench. First it was gay marriage, now this whole abortion thing. They just have to go.

Man Standing Next to Woman on the Corner Talking on Cell Phone: And replace them with your activist judges?

You have to love NYC!
